Part of the Extended Whatrup Family

Ron's mother Alice was sister to my Grandmother (Emily)  Ron's father, Bert, was a best friend of my Grandfather, Ron's sister Gladys was close to my mother and we met up often.  Two very vivid memories come to my mind, one when I was around 7 years old, Ron 16 yrs, his parents and my Grandparents were out for the evening so Ron had the wonderful task of child sitting me in his family home.   The second time was my 11th birthday in 1953 -  he visited with his Mum and Dad and he gave me the most beautiful ornithology book.  Photographs of birds each photo separated with tissue paper.  Even then his interest in birds was obvious.  Over the years, as often happens when parents and family pass away, we lost touch but this changed after I began research into Ron's Grandfather, my Great Grandfather's WW1 history. And due to my  posting to his regiment (on line) Ron got in touch with me.  We had much in common, in particular the Whatrup traits in looks and humour.  My highlight was when Ron sent me one a copy of one of his bird woodcuts.  I had it framed and it means so much to me.  I wish I could have met up with him one more time but I lived too far away.  However, memories are the best.
